Something is lurking beneath the water… explore what lies at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery! The creatures that live in our waters are beautiful, but they can also be strange, unusual, and unsettling before you get to know them. Yet, there is something scarier than sea monsters, ghosts, and goblins—marine debris (aka plastic pollution) is THE terrifying entity living in the darkest depths of the ocean and is looming this Halloween at The Haunted Sea, a popular seasonal installation at the Cannery. Learn how ocean plastic haunting the waters is brought to the surface and then evolves into something immersive, beautiful, and educational for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery – National Historic Site presents a journey to the ocean’s depths into the strange and awe-inspiring world of underwater creatures in The Haunted Sea. This annual art installation is created with upcycled materials collected from the ocean and raises awareness on the impacts of plastic and waste entangling with the vibrant life in our Coastal waters. Learn more about our ocean life and how oceans are being conserved and protected with our weekly Outreach Partners: Parks Canada Southern Resident Killer Whale outreach team—October 19, 27, 31, and November 3. Visitors may wander through the Herring Reduction Plant to discover the art crafted from Styrofoam and plastic materials that have been transformed into unique pieces that demonstrate how art and sustainability are connected. This captivating art installation will also include low lighting, black lights, and a smoke machine for effects, but will not have any jump scares or strobe lights, making this a family-friendly event and suitable for children of all ages. Mark your calendars and visit for the annual Steveston Trick or Treat on Thursday, October 31! Look for more activities on The Haunted Sea event page.

Regular admission fees apply – Youth (17 and under) and Society Members FREE, Adults $13.25, Seniors (65+) $11.25.
