Oh sun, how we have missed you! Yes we live in a rain forest, and yes we should get lots of rain, but my heavens Vancouver is gorgeous when topped by blue skies and puffy white clouds. Whichever powers-that-be placed the order for sunshine during Granville Island’s 11th Winterruption, thank you! The event was wonderful and the gorgeous weather made the event magical.
Winterruption runs all weekend long, so if you haven’t made it out yet you still have time tomorrow (Feb 21st). The day offers activities for all ages. Based on the demographics in our family, we hung out in the Kids Zone. Our youngest can not resist any face-painting opportunity. This time he opted for a full-face yellow & green butterfly. It is quite the sight behind his blue & orange glasses. Both of our sons took great pleasure in the puppet making station put on by the Vancouver International Children’s Festival. The body of the puppet was a bit challenging to assemble but they loved the decorating (hot glue and all). Just as we were wrapping up puppet making, a Cuba-style band and stilt walkers entertained the crowd and lead a parade through Granville Island. On our way out of the Kids’ Zone we stopped to purchase maple taffy (this was the only activity that cost any money). The best part was the boys got to make their own taffy stick…the maple syrup was poured onto crushed ice. Each boy was given a stick and told to start rolling it. Somehow I’ve reached 39 and never had snow-chilled maple syrup….I will be righting that wrong many, many times in the near future!
Other Winterruption events include: a scavenger hunt through the art workshops, pop up dances tour, a donut spectacular, a sustainable seafood walking tour and so much more. While the weather may be disagreeable tomorrow, the winter festival is definitely a not-to-be-missed event.
