Young People’s Theatre brings back the stellar production of “The Darkest Dark”, the popular ground-breaking new theatrical experience from the imagination of Canadian rockstar astronaut Chris Hadfield. Written for the stage by Ian MacIntyre and Jim Millan, who also directs, this Dora Award-winning stage adaptation (Outstanding Production) takes inspiration from Hadfield’s bestselling children’s book about his personal childhood experiences.
“The Darkest Dark” weaves theatre, design, projections, puppets, multi-media and magic, revealing a universe where anything is possible and where the dark… is for dreaming. Ideal for kids aged 6-12, there are special showtimes on Family Day long weekend and March Break, so the whole family can experience this play together!
YPT’s “The Darkest Dark” is Astronomically Fun for the Whole Family!
Families are bound to be *over the moon* for this play that centres on nine-year-old Chris, who is fascinated by space exploration and dreams of becoming a brave astronaut. In the summer of 1969, Chris is counting down the days until the televised event where Apollo 11 will land on the moon. He and his two friends, Jane and Herbie, vividly imagine themselves going to space in their club called the Stag Island Space Agency. However, Chris has been keeping a secret from his family and friends… he’s afraid of the dark! But with their support, young Chris finds the courage to confront his fears. He realizes that his friends have fears as well. Chris also discovers that, like space, the dark can be an unknown but it doesn’t have to be scary — it can be exciting!
Drawing from the ancestral teachings of bravery and wisdom, Young People’s Theatre’s “The Darkest Dark” illuminates many common themes of childhood, such as overcoming their fears, pursuing their goals, and appreciating their friends. Families can take this opportunity to discuss these ideas with their children, along with understanding their feelings and caring for one another.
