Winter is the perfect time for a break with the family! Whether it’s enjoying the best of the season or escaping to a hot destination, there’s no better time to enjoy some QT with loved ones. Unfortunately, winter is also cold & flu season. Sickness can put a damper on holiday fun and, no matter who goes down, it is a huge stressor when you’re away from home.
Family Fun Canada and Boogie Wipes want you to enjoy that precious vacation time with your loved ones, and make sure you’re prepared if a dreaded holiday sickness does make an appearance. That’s why we’ve compiled this handy list:
8 Top Tips For Dealing with Holiday Sickness
1/ Pack Your Staple Medications
When packing for your trip, don’t forget to throw in your go-to pain, fever, cough, and cold medications along with a few other essential first-aid items like a thermometer and a medicine cup. Bringing them along ensures you have them if illness strikes suddenly or in the middle of the night and stops you having to navigate pharmacies and unfamiliar medications at your vacation destination.
2/ TRAVEL INSURANCE, TRAVEL INSURANCE, TRAVEL INSURANCE
In the unfortunate event that you or any your family members require medical attention on holiday, it is imperative that you have adequate travel insurance in place. A surprising number of people still travel without it even with severe consequences like the potential for complete financial ruin or worse. Check if you are covered by any of your credit cards, and, if you’re not, purchase some of your own. Most importantly, no matter which insurance you choose, ASK QUESTIONS to make sure your coverage is adequate. Once it is in place, bring the documentation with you as it will ease the claims process should you need to use it.
3/ Don’t Forget Your Boogie Wipes®
Wherever you find yourself on holiday, you’ll want to have your trusty pack of Boogie Wipes®! These are made with natural saline that dissolves mucus, and, best of all, they leave delicate noses feeling nourished with vitamin E, aloe, and chamomile. Boogie Wipes® can even play a vital role in the prevention of spreading illness when used to wipe a runny nose, catch a sneeze, or clean messy fingers! Purchase Boogie Wipes at a participating retailer near you.
4/ Research the Health Care Options at Your Destination
Wherever you’re headed on vacation, find out what the health care options are and how to access them. Some resorts have an on-site doctor or offer ‘house calls’ from a local professional. Most places, your family should have no problem accessing the mainstream health care services, but, for your peace of mind, you may want to find out ahead of time where these are located and how you would access them if you needed to. Resort concierges, B and B owners, and a quick google search will often provide you with all the information you need on this topic.
5/ Know Your Emergency Plan
In a worst-case scenario, you will want to have an emergency plan in place. Before you leave, you will want to leave several contact numbers so family or friends may reach you if they need. You will also want to obtain a list of numbers to call in case of an emergency at your destination including emergency services, your home embassy, and perhaps a resort number that will assist you with the ins and outs of minor issues.
6/ If Illness Strikes, Don’t Panic
Its understandably upsetting and stressful to deal with sickness on holiday, but, if the unfortunate does happen, don’t panic. No doubt, your forethought and preparation for this eventuality will have put you in good stead! And remember, people get sick on vacation all the time! There are plenty of people and systems in place to help you navigate your way through it! Start with a call to the front desk of your accommodation. If they can’t help, most likely, they will know who can.
7/ Give Sickness its Fair Dues
As tempting as it may be to push through sickness and discomfort in favour of making the best of your holiday time, it is best to give illness its fair dues. As best you can, give yourself or your family member the opportunity to sleep or lay low for a day or two. The last thing you want is to exacerbate an issue or draw it out for longer than necessary.
8/ Divide and Conquer
If a sick little one needs a little extra love while they’re down and out, why not take turns with your travel companion staying in? One can cuddle, read a book, and watch movies in the hotel room while the other enjoys a little time exploring your destination.
