Your child is interested and ready for piano lessons, but you don’t know where to start. You want to find an experienced teacher who will be supportive and encouraging to your child, and Brenda Joyce checks all those boxes. Brenda is an accomplished musician who has offered piano lessons based on the Suzuki Piano Method for more than 20 years. She has her Bachelor of Music Theory and Composition (University of Toronto) and her Masters in Collaborative Piano Performance (Western University). Currently, in addition to offering lessons for kids and adults, she is on staff as ballet pianist at the Maritime Conservatory of the Performing Arts and is the choral accompanist for Tantallon Voices in Rhythm.
The Suzuki Piano Method
The Suzuki Method is based on the idea that musical ability can be developed in anyone, given the right environment. Developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, he believed that music should be learned in a supportive and encouraging environment, with emphasis on listening, repetition, and positive reinforcement. Five key principals of the method include: starting early, listening, parental involvement, repetition, and a positive environment. The Suzuki Piano Method uses a series of books and professional recordings to introduce compositions that progress in complexity. Students will first learn to play by ear and then grow their skills to read and write music. Group classes and recitals are important as well to give students the opportunities to learn from their peers.
Lessons for Kids
Brenda offers private lessons out of her cat-friendly West End Halifax home, and group lessons at nearby Hope United Church. Learn more about time commitment expectations for lessons here.
