Helen Lavendar Park is located in the charming community of Hearthstone and has been built in honour of beloved community member Helen Lavender. Bring your family on Sunday, August 25, 2024 to learn more about the amazing local namesake, enjoy free treats and activities, and have fun exploring this beautiful new playground and park space.
Who was Helen Lavender? Helen was a mother, teacher, writer, and storyteller. She made a lasting impact on the community of Sherwood Park through various volunteer positions and dedication to her work with the Strathcona County council. She proudly led the Storytelling Alberta group, collecting local history of the Sherwood Park area – work which would earn her a Storytelling Alberta Lifetime Membership in June of 2014. Helen’s 80 year life is fondly remembered with a loving legacy of advocacy, mentorship, and vibrant storytelling.
As part of this special Grand Opening and dedication, Mattamy Homes has worked with Helen’s family, and a local author and illustrator, to publish a storybook about her extraordinary life. The event will feature a live reading from a portion of the story, and attendees will be gifted copies of the book to add to your home library collection!
The 1.5 -acre Helen Lavendar Park in Hearthstore offers up a spectacular space for friends, family, and community to gather. The kids will love the state-of-the-art playground with its large climbing tower, multiple slides, and zip-line, plus basketball courts, and a winter skating rink.
