July 2012
There’s a new family friendly burger joint in town. My kids and I headed over to the special opening event to try out the new Smashburger in Royal Oak. True to its name, the burgers are made by smashing the 100% Certified Angus Beef patties. Evidently they have perfected smashing their patties to create a carmelized sear on the burger which keeps all the juicy burger goodness in during cooking.
My kids loved their burgers and their MacKay’s milkshakes. Smashburger originated in Denver, Colorado but now there are two Canadian franchises and both of them are in Calgary. I love that they incorporate local suppliers on their menu such as Cochrane’s MacKay’s ice cream for their milkshakes and Calgary’s Big Rock for their beer selections.
Smashburger offers a selection of their signature burgers (including the Calgary burger). If you are feeling creative you can customize your very own burger masterpiece choosing from a selection of artisanal cheeses, fresh produce and a variety of sauces. There is also a selection of chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and fresh tossed signature salads.
Kids have their very own menu (ages 12 and under) and for $5.49 your child can choose between a burger, chicken strips, hot dog or grilled cheese. Their selection comes with fries and a drink.
In honour of the grand opening, Smashburger welcomed some of the city’s most prominent food writers and bloggers to participate in a Stampede Burger Battle. If you’d like to read about it, check out Misty Hamel’s Life Where We Are blog post about the Smashburger Stampede Burger Battle.
