In 2015, the Calgary Public Library recently revealed some exciting changes and future plans, all geared toward getting Calgarians into their library. These changes also take library toward its goal of being the best public library system in the world. Here’s a quick summary of what’s new and what’s coming.
Free Membership
The Calgary Public Library has, effective immediately, eliminated the $12 annual adult membership free. Every Calgary resident is now entitled to receive a card FREE and if you already have one, it will automatically renew on your renewal date.
If you love your library and are in a position to do so, consider making a donation to become a ‘Friend of the Calgary Public Library’. To thank donors, a credit to www.librarystore.ca will be given for amounts of $30 (annual) or $2.50 (monthly) and up. The more you donate, the larger your credit. Tax receipts are issued for all donations over $10.
Even if you can’t make a financial contribution at this time, consider volunteering at the library. There are lots of volunteer opportunities available; get more information here.
Streamlined Services
In addition to free membership, the $2 hold fee has also been eliminated, a basic printing credit is available to all members and late fees are being simplified. All libraries are also offering free community meeting spaces.
New Central Library
Slated to open in 2018, the new Central Library will be located just east of City Hall. At 240,000 square feet, the library will do much more than house books. It will also have play space for kids, wifi and computers, additional materials and resources, and large spaces for meeting and learning.
